Goodwill Industries, Ontario Great Lakes traces it roots to 1943 when nine social service agencies in London came together to set up a used clothing store. Since that time, Goodwill has changed a lot to get where it is today, with its mission as a social enterprise that recycles donated goods and provides employment services to create opportunity for meaningful work. But the core of Goodwill has stayed the same. In the late 1940’s, London Goodwill Industries operated out of a house on Lyle street, repairing and selling used clothing. By 1955, Goodwill became incorporated by the province of Ontario as a non-profit organization. In the early 1960’s Goodwill had moved to a location at 295 Richmond street where it employed five people with disabilities and produced annual revenue of $7,000. Four decades later, Goodwill is an $8 million social enterprise, 70% self funded. With retail stores in London, St. Thomas, Kitchener, Stratford, Cambridge and Woodstock, as well as Work Force Development in London, Goodwill employs over 200 people. Throughout Goodwill’s Career Service Centres a dedicated team of professional staff provides a comprehensive range of services across the whole continuum of employment support – from assessment to work placement, to coaching on the job. Each year Goodwill helps more than 5,500 people overcome physical, mental, economic or other employment barriers by providing: An Employment Resource Centre open to the public, Assessment, career counseling and job search support,Skill development, placement and on the job training, A staffing service for both employees and employers, Coaching in the work place to foster transition to long term employment, Links to supports such as transportation, child care, clothing, personal counseling, affordable housing and assistive devices required for employment, Employment opportunities within Goodwill’s own diverse workforce. Funding for Goodwill programs is derived from three key sources; the first, clothing and household goods donated to Goodwill are sold in retail stores. The second source of funding is from grants from municipal, provincial and federal programs that support jobseekers prepare for and secure work. These programs are for specific groups of jobseekers such as Employment Insurance or Social Assistance recipients, those with disabilities or specific needs. The final funding source is from fees paid by employers or other organizations. Goodwill is a successful social enterprise ‘self generating’ funding for more than 50% of its $8 million operation.
